A groundbreaking ceremony in Rochester signaled the official start of the creation of a memorial site dedicated to Frederick Douglas.

RochesterFirst.com reports that construction should start in late August on the Frederick Douglass Memorial Plaza in Highland Park, and it should be completed in the fall.

The plaza will be the home for a statue of Douglass that will be relocated from a different area of the park.

The website quotes Assembly member Harry Bronson as saying “It’s about putting it in a place that is more prominent and visible for all to see, all to understand, and all to learn from this wonderful man, Douglass the freedom seeker and liberator for all people.”
