Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) officials broke ground this week on the relocation and redevelopment of the Yaphank Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) station. The new station will be located closer to William Floyd Parkway, the Long Island Expressway, and Brookhaven National Laboratory, providing a more modern, accessible transit option for Long Island commuters.
The new station will feature a 50-car parking lot, an integrated bus loop, a plaza with a train schedule totem and bike rack, and a Help Point intercom on the platform. The station will also be fully accessible in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
“Riders in eastern Suffolk deserve a more convenient and modern transit hub, and we’re ready to deliver one better, faster, and cheaper than ever before,” said MTA President of Construction and Development Jamie Torres-Springer. “Yaphank can look forward to a fully accessible station that will anchor this neighborhood for generations to come.”
Construction work, which includes grading and utility installation, is already underway, with the station scheduled for substantial completion in the second quarter of 2026. Once completed, the existing Yaphank Station will be demolished.
The $20 million project is part of the MTA’s capital program and will be supported by state funding. The new station’s location, near an industrial park and Brookhaven National Laboratory, is expected to attract more riders and support future growth.
Kyle Strober, executive director of the Association for a Better Long Island, noted that the relocation reflects strategic investment in Long Island’s infrastructure. “The new location will stimulate economic development along the William Floyd Parkway corridor and increase access to Brookhaven National Laboratory, which generates hundreds of millions of dollars for Long Island,” Strober said.
Once complete, the Yaphank LIRR station is expected to become a key hub for commuters and businesses.
