Skanska, a global construction and development firm, has been awarded a $249 million contract by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to carry out a main cable dehumidification project on the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, officials announced Thursday.

The bridge, which connects Staten Island and Brooklyn, serves as a key link in the interstate highway system, providing the shortest route between the Mid-Atlantic states and Long Island.

Bill Matre, senior vice president at Skanska Koch, said the company is “proud to play a pivotal role in advancing critical infrastructure improvements to one of the nation’s most storied bridges.”

The design-build project includes the installation of a main cable dehumidification system on all four cables of the bridge, as well as an acoustic monitoring system for each cable. Work also involves associated electrical and communication systems, maintenance and monitoring of the new systems for five years after commissioning, and facilitating internal inspections of the main cable panels.

Additional tasks include replacing all cable band bolts, main cable aerial obstruction lights and supports, messenger cables, hand ropes, and stanchions.

The contract was awarded in July 2025, with completion expected in the third quarter of 2029.
