Construction is underway on the Casanova Residence, a 96-unit supportive and affordable housing development in the Hunts Point neighborhood of the Bronx.

City officials and representatives of The Doe Fund recently broke ground on the project, which will provide 58 supportive housing units for individuals and families living with mental illness, substance use disorders or disabling medical conditions. The remaining apartments will be available to income-qualified residents through New York City’s affordable housing lottery.

The development will include on-site supportive services, case management, education and job training programs, free broadband, a fitness center, landscaped outdoor space and community service areas operated by The Doe Fund.

The project is part of New York City’s broader effort to expand supportive housing and address the city’s housing shortage.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani said the city has committed $1 billion over the next two fiscal years to create and preserve supportive housing through its Block by Block housing plan and the recently adopted city budget.

“Affordable and supportive housing is how we build a city where every New Yorker can live with dignity,” Mamdani said. “We’re making historic investments in homes that will give New Yorkers the stability they deserve.”

Jennifer Mitchell, president and CEO of The Doe Fund, said the organization has worked in the Hunts Point community since 2016 and looks forward to adding the Casanova Residence to its portfolio of supportive and affordable housing.

The development is also part of the city’s broader supportive housing strategy, which includes the Supportive Preservation Program to help maintain existing supportive housing and the SPEED initiatives aimed at reducing predevelopment timelines for affordable housing projects by as much as two years.
