The next phase of a $1.1 billion plan to modernize facilities at State University of New York Downstate Health Sciences University Hospital is set to move forward following approval of a construction contract to demolish a condemned, out-of-service parking garage.
The demolition will clear and prepare the site for a future hospital annex that will include a state-of-the-art ambulatory surgery centre, expanding services in cardiology and oncology.
“Every New Yorker deserves access to high-quality medical care,” said Kathy Hochul. “Through the demolition of this out-of-service garage, the new hospital annex will be able to be built and real progress will be made in providing higher quality services and support for the Brooklyn community. This is an essential step forward in the modernization of SUNY Downstate’s hospital, and I am thrilled that we are moving full speed ahead.”
Approval of the demolition contract follows a December 2025 announcement marking the start of the design phase for two major projects aimed at upgrading the hospital’s facilities.
The broader $1.1 billion investment will fund repairs and infrastructure upgrades, modernization of inpatient rooms and expansion of the emergency department, in addition to construction of the new annex on the former garage site.
State officials say the work is intended to strengthen access to care and modernize critical health infrastructure serving Brooklyn residents.
