In a major step toward accelerating green technology and job growth, New York City officials announced Thursday that the Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator (LACI) and the Cambridge Innovation Center (CIC) will lead a new 200,000-square-foot climate innovation hub in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. The facility, called BATWorks, will be located at the Brooklyn Army Terminal and is expected to serve 150 startups, create over 600 jobs, and generate $2.6 billion in economic impact over the next decade.
The project is backed by a $100 million investment from the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC), with an additional $1.4 million earmarked to support local workforce development through the South Brooklyn Industrial Development Corporation. The goal: connect Sunset Park residents to green-collar jobs and training programs in emerging sectors.
LACI will bring its expertise in climate technology piloting and business incubation, including a program allowing companies to test their products in live urban environments. CIC, known for operating innovation campuses globally, will design and manage the hub’s workspace and labs.
Mayor Eric Adams hailed the project as a transformative step in his “Harbor of the Future” initiative to reinvent the city’s waterfront for sustainable industry. “We will create transformative technologies at Sunset Park, support hundreds of ‘green-collar’ jobs, and work across the public and private sector to build a more sustainable future for our city and our country,” Adams said in a statement.
BATWorks is slated to open in 2026.
