The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has announced that major accessibility and renovation work will begin this month at three Metro-North Railroad Harlem Line stations in the Bronx: Williams Bridge, Woodlawn and Botanical Garden.
Construction crews will completely rebuild the Williams Bridge and Woodlawn stations, adding a total of four elevators to make both stations fully accessible. Work includes replacing both platforms and installing snow-melting systems, updating platform foundations and piers, extending platforms, and replacing stairways.
At Botanical Garden Station, workers will replace both elevators, renovate platforms and select piers, and rebuild ADA-compliant ramps. The historic wood canopy will be restored, and new canopies will be built on the southbound platform. Upgrades to stairs, walkways and other infrastructure are also planned.
The MTA said the work will be performed concurrently at all three stations while keeping service operational. Construction phasing will include temporary platforms, staircases and ramps to maintain boarding access. Coordination with city agencies and utility companies is underway.
“These new upgrades will provide modern and accessible stations so Bronxites can take full advantage of the access Metro-North provides to jobs, education and the entire region,” said MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber.
Williams Bridge Station is located near East Gun Hill Road and Webster Avenue, with access to Bx41-SBS, Bx28, Bx38 and Bx41 buses. Woodlawn Station, located at East 233rd Street, connects to the 2 and 5 subway lines, several Bronx bus routes and a Bee-Line bus stop. Botanical Garden Station, adjacent to the New York Botanical Garden, serves as a key gateway to the cultural site.
No completion date for the project has been announced.
