New York State is providing $10 million to develop energy-efficient heating and cooling technology for large buildings. Governor Kathy Hochul announced the launch of the Clean Heat for All: Packaged Terminal Heat Pump (PTHP) program, which will support the production and demonstration of cold-climate heat pumps to replace outdated air conditioners in multifamily residences, senior living buildings, and hotels.
“This investment will help more New Yorkers manage their energy use and experience better indoor climate control,” Hochul said. “Replacing older, inefficient units with energy-saving solutions will reduce building emissions, lower costs for building upgrades, and reduce strain on the state’s electric grid.”
The program, administered by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), will provide competitive funding for manufacturers and building owners to develop, demonstrate, and install cold-climate heat pumps. These units offer high-efficiency performance that can effectively heat and cool buildings in New York’s diverse climate, which ranges from freezing winters to hot summers.
Funding comes from the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative.
