Work is underway on a $17-million project to replace the bridge carrying State Route 17 over State Route 17K in Orange County, part of a broader effort to modernize key infrastructure along one of New York’s most heavily travelled corridors.

The project will replace a 68-year-old structure with a new single-span bridge designed to improve safety, increase resiliency and reduce long-term maintenance needs in the Town of Wallkill, where rapid growth has placed additional pressure on regional transportation routes.

“New Yorkers deserve quality roads and bridges to get where they need to go safely and efficiently, and that is exactly what we are delivering with this project,” said Governor Kathy Hochul. “By replacing this aging bridge along State Route 17, we will ensure continued smooth travel along one of the most important transportation corridors in the state to further fuel the economic boom we are seeing throughout the Catskills.”

A key feature of the new structure will be increased vertical clearance over State Route 17K. The bridge will provide 16 feet, eight inches of clearance—about two feet higher than the existing span—bringing it up to modern standards and reducing the risk of collisions with over-height vehicles.

The replacement bridge will also incorporate jointless deck construction, a design intended to reduce noise, improve ride quality and lower long-term maintenance costs. Additional work includes new steel girders, concrete abutments, updated road surfaces and utility upgrades.

State officials say the project was advanced using 3D modelling technology to improve design coordination, reduce reliance on printed drawings and streamline collaboration between engineering teams.

New York State Department of Transportation Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez said the project reflects a broader effort to modernize infrastructure across the state.

“From the Bronx to Buffalo, New York State continues to find innovative ways to build back our infrastructure to better serve New Yorkers and meet the challenges of the 21st Century,” Dominguez said. “This bridge replacement project along State Route 17 is utilizing cutting-edge design techniques that will help us get the job done faster and deliver a safer, more resilient structure that will keep travelers on the move.”

State Route 17 is a major east–west artery connecting the Mid-Hudson, Catskills and Southern Tier regions. Officials say the bridge replacement is part of a wider series of upgrades along the corridor, including interchange improvements at Exit 122, reconstruction of a bridge over the Wallkill River, and the addition of a shared-use path designed to improve multi-modal access.
