The New York State Department of Transportation has announced a $60.8 million project to replace aging bridges along Interstate 490 over the Erie Canal and Kreag Road in Perinton.

The three-span bridges, originally built in the 1950s, will be fully reconstructed to enhance safety and sustainability. The new design will eliminate joints, bearings, and piers, cutting long-term maintenance costs.

The project will also include a new concrete median barrier, upgraded drainage systems, and culvert repairs. To help alleviate traffic during extended lane closures, the state will implement a zipper merge system, allowing drivers to use both lanes until the merge point and then alternate entering the open lane.

“We need transportation infrastructure repairs for safer commutes in Monroe County,” said state Sen. Samra Brouk in a statement. “This project will improve driving conditions and revitalize our upstate community.”

Construction will begin in April, starting with the eastbound bridges, while replacements for the westbound lanes are scheduled for 2026. The Bushnell’s Basin exit is already closed, and during the 2025 season, I-490 will be reduced to one lane in each direction.

The project is expected to be completed by fall 2027.
