The Atlantic Avenue proposal, which aims to reshape a 21-block stretch of Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn has taken a step forward with approval from the NYC planning commission.
The mixed-use development plan includes 4,600 new homes in the areas of Crown Heights and Bedford-Stuyvesant. It will also bring significant changes to local infrastructure, including improvements to open spaces and traffic safety measures.
Updates would also be made to St. Andrew’s Playground, with $24.2 million allocated for new facilities including a multi-use field, running track, and upgraded recreational areas. Additionally, the plan includes various street safety enhancements like bike lanes and expanded sidewalks.
The area, which has been zoned for industrial use since the 1960s, will see its zoning changed to allow for mixed-use buildings, combining housing, commercial spaces, and manufacturing businesses.
Several public meetings and workshops were held over the past year and the original plan has been revised to better accommodate residential and industrial development needs.
With favorable recommendations from Brooklyn Community Boards 3 and 8 and Borough President Antonio Reynoso, the plan now heads to the New York City Council for a public hearing and vote.
