The Buffalo Sewer Authority is preparing to break ground on the Middle Main Streetscape Project, a $70-million infrastructure overhaul that will reconstruct and modernize a 2.5-mile stretch of Main Street from Goodell Street to Kensington Avenue, with completion expected in spring 2029.
The long-term project will transform one of Buffalo’s key corridors into a safer, more accessible and better-connected urban arterial for motorists, transit users, cyclists and pedestrians. It includes full roadway reconstruction, upgraded utilities and extensive streetscape improvements designed to support neighbourhood revitalization and economic development.
“It’s no secret that the infrastructure on Main Street has been ignored for too long,” said Mayor Byron Brown. “This project is about finally investing in the Main Street Buffalo deserves. We need safer streets, better sidewalks, modern infrastructure, improved accessibility, and stronger connections between neighbourhoods, businesses, and destinations across our city.
“This is exactly how we build a better Buffalo.”
The $70-million project is funded through a mix of federal, state and local contributions. The largest portion, $41.6 million, comes from federal transportation funding, including a $25-million RAISE grant, with additional federal support flowing through the region’s Transportation Improvement Program (TIP). State funding totals $21.5 million, including matching funds through the Marchiselli Aid Program and CHIPS allocations tied to the corridor’s State Touring Route designation. Local contributions account for $6.9 million, including $1.5 million from the Buffalo Sewer Authority.
Work includes full roadway repaving, new ADA-compliant sidewalks, upgraded intersections and traffic signals, protected bicycle infrastructure on both sides of the corridor, enhanced pedestrian crossings, upgraded LED and pedestrian-scale lighting, and expanded green infrastructure. Additional streetscape elements include street trees, landscaping, seating, waste receptacles and public realm improvements designed to enhance walkability and urban design.
Green infrastructure components are intended to improve stormwater management and reduce combined sewer impacts while integrating environmental design into the rebuilt corridor.
Construction is scheduled to begin this summer, with initial work focused on the west side of Main Street starting near Goodell Street and progressing north. During the early phases, the corridor will be reduced to two travel lanes, with parking restricted to the east side. West-side parking within active construction zones will be temporarily removed.
A virtual information session for business owners and property owners in the project area is scheduled for Thurs, May 28 at 5 p.m. to outline construction impacts and phasing details. Click here for a link to the meeting: https://www.buffalony.gov/1281/Middle-Main-Street
