Micron Technology is accelerating construction of its massive semiconductor manufacturing campus in Clay, as the company announces plans to increase its U.S. investment commitment to more than $250 billion through 2035.
Vertical construction is now underway at the Central New York site with the first concrete pour for its first fabrication plant, a milestone reached more than one quarter ahead of its original schedule.
The project is expected to become the largest private investment in New York State history and will require thousands of skilled construction workers, including union trades, apprentices, specialty contractors and suppliers.
“Reaching this milestone ahead of schedule reflects the speed and determination behind this project,” said Sanjay Mehrotra, Micron chairman, president and CEO. “Micron is proud to bring the world’s most advanced memory manufacturing to Central New York, strengthen the domestic semiconductor supply chain and help secure America’s technology leadership for generations to come.”
The Clay site is the centrepiece of Micron’s U.S. manufacturing strategy, with plans for up to four fabrication plants. The company estimates the project will create up to 50,000 jobs in New York, including 9,000 direct Micron positions.
Construction activity has already generated significant work for local contractors. Micron said it has directed approximately $675 million to New York-based contractors, suppliers and subcontractors during early site work, including companies from Syracuse, Liverpool, Rome, Rochester, Watertown, Buffalo and Binghamton.
More than 80 per cent of workers on the site so far have been New York residents, the company said.
Bechtel has been selected as the engineering, procurement and construction partner for the first New York fab. Jacobs is serving as the architectural and engineering design partner, while Gilbane Building Company is handling preconstruction and site infrastructure work.
The construction push is expected to create opportunities for skilled trades as Micron builds out the high-tech manufacturing campus. The company said the project will require thousands of craft professionals at peak construction, including electricians, pipefitters, millwrights, equipment operators and other specialized workers.
Micron is also expanding its domestic semiconductor supply chain, announcing plans to invest up to $3 billion to support suppliers and related manufacturing capacity in the United States.
“Today’s milestone marks another major step for Micron in Central New York,” said New York Gov. Kathy Hochul. “This is the largest private investment in New York State history, and it’s already delivering for New Yorkers, our state economy, and our local businesses.”
The company is also advancing semiconductor projects in Idaho and Virginia as part of its broader U.S. manufacturing expansion. Micron said the combined investments are expected to create more than 90,000 jobs and strengthen domestic semiconductor production.
