The Gateway Development Commission (GDC) released a new video this week, showcasing the construction workers building the Hudson Tunnel Project (HTP), one of the nation’s most critical infrastructure efforts.
The video features interviews with workers and footage from five active construction sites, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the people and progress driving the $16 billion megaproject. Currently, two of the ten construction segments are more than halfway complete, and one is expected to finish by year’s end. Full-scale tunnel boring is scheduled to begin in 2026.
In a joint statement, GDC Commissioners Alicia Glen (New York), Balpreet Grewal-Virk (New Jersey), and Tony Coscia (Amtrak) emphasized the personal impact of the project: “This video puts a human face on the jobs the HTP is already creating and lets us hear, in their own words, what this project means to the people building it.”
GDC CEO Tom Prendergast added, “Too often, the men and women who build megaprojects like the HTP are invisible. This video gives them a voice…building the HTP is not just a job, it is an opportunity to be part of something bigger.”
The Hudson Tunnel Project is designed to modernize and expand train capacity between New Jersey and New York by constructing a new two-tube tunnel beneath the Hudson River and rehabilitating the 115-year-old existing tunnel, a frequent source of service disruptions. In total, the project includes nine miles of new rail infrastructure.
GDC reports that ongoing construction efforts are currently supporting more than 20,000 jobs and generating $4.5 billion in economic output. Over the project’s full life cycle, it is expected to support 95,000 jobs and $19.6 billion in economic activity.
As part of a broader public awareness campaign, the GDC is promoting the video on social media and through outreach to key stakeholders in Washington, New York, and New Jersey.
