New York City is taking a significant step toward sustainable urban development with the launch of the Clean Construction Innovation Pilot.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Mayor’s Office of Climate & Environmental Justice (MOCEJ) and the Office of Technology and Innovation (OTI), will evaluate the viability of electric construction equipment in City-run projects.
This pilot program comes on the heels of the formation of the North American Clean Construction Coalition, reinforcing the city’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting environmentally friendly construction practices.
Any company manufacturing or supplying electric construction equipment or charging equipment, including battery hybrid generators, can apply to participate in the pilot program.

All submissions will be reviewed and evaluated by a selection committee comprised of City agency representatives during an open submission process. The City will deliver a presentation about the pilot’s goals and sites, and answer questions from potential applicants during an informational webinar that will take place in February. After submissions close, the applications will be reviewed. Finalists will be selected in April 2025.

The construction industry is a major contributor to climate change, responsible for over 23 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. Through this initiative, the city will address pollution concerns while improving the quality of life for residents by reducing air and noise pollution.
Manufacturers and suppliers of light-, medium-, and heavy-duty electric construction equipment are invited to participate in the pilot by providing their equipment at no cost for a trial period of two to six months.
It will be assessed for key performance metrics such as battery life, charging efficiency, operational effectiveness, ease of use for workers, and overall environmental impact.
The deadline for submissions is March 10, with selected participants to be announced during Earth Week in April. This initiative builds upon Mayor Eric Adams’ Executive Order 23, which mandates City agencies to prioritize low-emission vehicles and equipment in capital construction projects. Furthermore, New York City has joined the C40 Clean Construction Accelerator, committing to achieving zero-emission construction sites citywide by 2030 where technology allows.
