Skanska USA Building Inc. has signed a $163-million contract with the New York City Department of Design and Construction (DDC) to build a new waterfront connection for the East Side Greenway.

The design-build project, designed in partnership with Claire Weisz Architects LLP (WXY), will connect East River Park and Captain Patrick J. Brown Walk along the East River.

The new East Side Greenway 14th Street Connector will replace a narrow pedestrian and cycling path, known as the “pinch point,” alongside the FDR Drive. It will provide a continuous route for two-way bicycle and pedestrian traffic along the waterfront.

The work includes construction of a new esplanade with a shared pedestrian and cycling path, landscaping, lighting, seating and other public amenities.

The DDC is managing the project for the city’s departments of transportation and parks.

“This new greenway will connect two parks on the East Side, allowing for continuous two-way travel for cyclists and pedestrians along the FDR Drive,” said DDC Commissioner Paul A. Ochoa when the team was announced as the apparent selected proposer.

Design engagement is expected to begin soon, with a groundbreaking anticipated in early 2028. Completion is targeted for the end of 2030.

The contract is valued at US$163 million, approximately SEK 1.5 billion, and will be included in Skanska’s U.S. order bookings for the fourth quarter of 2026.
