STV and Naik Consulting Group have received a notice to proceed with construction management on Amtrak’s East River Tunnel (ERT) rehabilitation project.
The joint venture will lead a comprehensive overhaul of the tunnel infrastructure, including repairs to two tunnels that were severely damaged by Superstorm Sandy. Work will modernize the entire tunnel system along the Northeast Corridor, improving reliability and ensuring long-term sustainability.
The project include:
- Demolition of existing tunnel systems down to the liner.
- Rebuilding and rehabilitating the tunnel structure.
- Replacing cable benches.
- Installing new fire and life safety systems.
- Upgrading signals and traction power systems.
- Converting tracks to a modern, direct fixation track system.
The rehabilitation is expected to reduce noise and vibrations, and enhance tunnel durability and reliability, making the system less vulnerable to weather-related damage, reducing the likelihood of breakdowns.
Work will take place underground and at key above-ground locations, including Penn Station in Manhattan and Sunnyside Yard in Queens. This includes the installation of new signal houses, traction power cables, and additional facilities in Queens.
“We are grateful for the opportunity to work alongside Amtrak in rebuilding this vital part of the nation’s rail infrastructure. The East River Tunnel is crucial to the Northeast Corridor, and this project will ensure its safe, reliable operation for the next century, supporting economic growth and sustainability,” Sanjay Naik, president and CEO of Naik Consulting Group, said in a statement.
