New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has announced a $5.3 million investment aimed at enhancing training and resources for Long Island’s volunteer firefighters during an event honoring their service. The initiative underscores the vital role these volunteers play in communities across New York State.

“New York’s firefighters serve with unparalleled bravery and dedication,” Hochul said. “Every day, they risk their lives to protect others, often on a volunteer basis. Today, we recognize their extraordinary contributions by investing in critical resources for these heroes.”

New York State is home to more than 1,600 volunteer fire departments, with nearly 91,000 volunteers serving their communities. On Long Island, volunteers operate nearly all of the 179 fire departments, collectively saving local taxpayers billions of dollars annually. Hochul emphasized the importance of supporting these volunteers through training programs and mental health resources.

New Funding Initiatives

The funding package includes:

  • $300,000 for capital improvements at Suffolk County Fire Academy: This investment will upgrade training equipment at the Suffolk County Fire Academy, providing firefighters with access to state-of-the-art facilities.
  • $1.85 million for South Floral Park Fire Department training center: Nearly $2 million will be allocated to expand the training center for the South Floral Park Fire Department, which has grown from a struggling unit with 20 members to a thriving organization of 51 volunteers over the past decade.
  • $3 million for the Deer Park Volunteer Fire Department Museum: In a bid to preserve the legacy of volunteer firefighters, Hochul announced $3 million to convert a rundown motel in Deer Park into a new Volunteer Fire Department Museum. This facility will honor the history of local firefighters while serving as an educational and community gathering space, inspiring future generations.

These initiatives are part of the state’s ongoing commitment to support and recognize the invaluable contributions of volunteer firefighters throughout New York.

As the state moves forward with these transformative projects, it continues to reaffirm its dedication to a sustainable and resilient future, ensuring that all New Yorkers are equipped to face the challenges posed by climate change.
