Construction is about to start on a $32.4 million initiative to resurface and restore a 5.5-mile stretch of Interstate 287 in Westchester County, one of the Hudson Valley’s busiest commuter routes.

The project will address the stretch of the Cross Westchester Expressway between Westchester Avenue in Harrison and U.S. Route 1 in Rye, focusing on road joint repairs, new pavement, and upgraded road striping.

To minimize disruptions on this key highway, which links the Gov. Mario M. Cuomo Bridge with Connecticut, construction will occur exclusively at night.

Work will start with road joint repairs, followed by full-scale resurfacing operations expected to start in early 2025. This phase will involve milling the existing pavement and replacing it with fiber-reinforced, warm-mix asphalt—a more durable material designed to extend the lifespan of the road and reduce cracking.

Additional upgrades include repairs to drainage systems, enhanced reflective striping for better visibility in adverse weather, and improvements to traffic signals and curb ramps at nearby exits and entrances. Completion of the project is projected for fall 2025.

“Investing in our roads and bridges is critical for the health and economic vitality of our state,” Governor Hochul stated. “This resurfacing project on the Cross Westchester Expressway will ensure smoother commutes for the thousands of drivers who rely on this route daily, while also enhancing the road’s resilience and durability.”
