Buffalo Public Schools officials and project partners recently marked a construction milestone on the district’s new Central Commissary facility, signing a ceremonial steel beam that will become part of the building’s structure.
The facility, under construction at 1016 East Delevan Ave., is expected to serve as the central hub for preparing and distributing meals to students throughout the district when it opens in spring 2027.
District officials said the new commissary will significantly change how school meals are prepared, replacing a greater reliance on processed and frozen foods with a cook-chill system that allows staff to prepare meals from scratch in large quantities using fresher ingredients, including locally sourced products when available.
The project is designed to improve the quality, freshness and nutritional value of meals served across the district while expanding menu options for students.
The facility will include commercial kitchens, expanded storage areas, a test kitchen and a training room for food service employees. Officials said the additional space will provide a safer and more efficient work environment for staff while supporting ongoing training and menu development.
Beyond its role in school food operations, the commissary is expected to serve as a community resource. Plans call for opportunities for residents to use portions of the facility and participate in programs focused on nutrition and healthy eating.
The project is being developed by McGuire Development Company and designed by Kideney Architects. Officials credited the district’s food services department and community supporters for helping advance the project, which they said will strengthen school nutrition programs for years to come.
Construction is scheduled to continue through 2026, with the facility expected to begin operations in spring 2027.
