Construction has started on a major expansion at Cross County Center in Yonkers, the 1.15 million-sq. ft. retail hub serving Westchester County, Marx Realty announced.

The project will add two new retail buildings totaling 58,000 sq. ft., underground parking, and a four-acre public park designed for events and community programming.

The retail center opened in 1954 with 30 stores. Today, it includes more than 100 retail, dining, educational and entertainment spaces.

“Cross County was the first ever mall built in America, the first outdoor mall. They always seem to be reinventing themselves,” said Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano.

The development includes a 14,000-sq. ft. single-story building and a 44,000-square-foot two-story building. The larger building will house a national apparel retailer’s super flagship location, while Marx Realty plans to restack existing tenants to optimize space for both new and current retailers.

The park will feature an allée of trees, seating options, and areas for seasonal programming, including farmers markets, Summer Fest events, and wellness programs. An adjacent boardwalk will offer café-style seating and shaded areas.

Cross County Center is currently home to more than 100 retail, dining, educational, and entertainment tenants. Marx Realty said the expansion and new public spaces are intended to enhance the center’s role as a community hub and regional lifestyle destination.

“Green spaces, a beautiful new park, seating areas and year-round programming provide ample opportunity to spend a day at the center enjoying all it has to offer,” Deitelzweig said.
