Developers are seeking approval for a 17-story, 129,000 sq. ft. mixed use building as part of the $300 million The Peninsula project in the Bronx.

Gilbane Development Company with Hudson Companies and Mutual Housing Association of New York have proposed the structure, part of a five-acre development at the site of the former Sportford juvenile jail complex.

Crain’s New York Business says the project will include 53,500 sq. ft. of recreational facilities, 52,000 square feet of open space, some 50,000 square feet of light-industrial space and a supermarket, as well as five residential buildings.

One of the buildings will be the 17-story structure with 135 residential units that are entirely affordable, plus a 6,400- square-foot community space..

The Peninsula will create 177 permanent jobs and more than 1,600 temporary construction jobs, according to its website. Many of its expected commercial tenants are Bronx-based and from the Hunts Point neighborhood, Gilbane says.

The project, which would be completed in three phases, broke ground in November 2019. When the city began shutting down construction in response to the pandemic, affordable housing, among other types of construction, were allowed to continue. The first phase is expected to be finished in 2021, Crain’s reported.
