New York State has announced $27.5 million for a major expansion project at Elmhurst Hospital in Queens.
More than $20 million will go to a project that includes expansion of the Women’s Pavilion from 16,000 to 35,000 sq. ft., a major overhaul will add three new floors and increase the facility’s capacity for high-quality prenatal care.
Planned upgrades include advanced obstetric services, high-risk pregnancy care, nutrition counseling, and comprehensive prenatal education. New amenities will also address pelvic floor disorders, gynecological cancers, and breast health, alongside mental health services for postpartum care. The expansion will incorporate state-of-the-art equipment like sonogram machines and mammography units.
Also $7.5 million will be used for construction of a new, 1,500-sq. ft. PICU. Currently, the absence of a PICU at Elmhurst means local families must travel significant distances for critical care. The new unit will bring essential care closer to home, equipped with advanced monitoring systems and diagnostic tools.
The expansion and PICU construction are set to start this year, but detailed project timelines have not been announced.
