Work has started on a $200 million pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in Dunkirk, according to a report from Observer Today.

The facility will be used by Athenex. Two years ago, the biopharmaceutical company announced plans to invest $1.62 billion in its oncology manufacturing facility in Dunkirk.

According to the report, site clearing is underway on Lake Shore Drive East where the 300,000 sq. ft. manufacturing facility will be built.

The state will invest $200 million to create the manufacturing facility, which Athenex will use to manufacture sterile high potency oncology drugs in a specialized, controlled environment for shipment around the world.

Athenex will to invest $1.62 billion in drug discovery and advanced manufacturing partnership, creating 900 jobs in Dunkirk and 500 jobs in Buffalo over the next 10 years.

The state will own the facility and tools purchased for it.
