Newsday reports that a New York judge says two men “betrayed” the people of Long Island when they dumped tens of thousands of tons of contaminated debris into various areas of their communities.

State Supreme Court judge Fernado Camacho made the comments during the April 27 sentencing of Thomas Datre Jr. and Christopher Grabe for dumping debris at four different Suffolk County sites. Datre was sentenced to a year in jail while Grabe will spend one month in jail and another five months doing community service.

Before imposing the sentence, the judge had victims of the dumping scheme read their statements to the court. A charity that builds homes for veterans said it can no longer do so because of the expense of cleaning up the illegal dumping.

Both men apologized at the sentencing hearing.
